Which means you can feel awful, be in your head, question everything & STILL BELIEVE something might connect if you stay. When our bodies sense threat we go into survival mode. On stage this can look like speeding up, over-explaining or approval-seeking… But when we feel safe we’re in creative mode! This looks like PLAY, listening, taking your sweet a$$ time & genuine presence! A settled body creating timing. Timing creates trust And trust creates laughter! Obsessed with this concept!! Your nervous system is the instrument. Not the jokes. Not the tags. YOU. And when that instrument is out of tune, it doesn’t matter how well-written the material is… the room will feel it. This is why I care so much about nervous system regulation in comedy! Because most of what we call “bad sets” aren’t actually about writing. They’re about a body trying to get out of danger. So you rush or talk over moments or straight up abandon things that were just starting to land (hi me!) Not because the material isn’t there but because you couldn’t stay with it long enough. When the instrument is even sliiiightly more in tune, everything shifts. You stop chasing the room and start holding it. THAT’S where your voice actually lives!! I have this phrase I can drop into almost anything on stage: “ever heard of it???” It always gets a lilttle pop, which is how I know I’m using it too much! It’s not just a tag. It’s insurance. Because if the joke doesn’t land, that does. Which meaaannssss I never have to find out if a joke can stand on its own. I am still unlearning this!! And I’ve been thinking a lot about this lately... how often we step in & “help” instead of letting something real happen. That idea (where we interrupt ourselves, smooth things out, “perform” instead of stay) is something I’ve been digging into a lot.
